Archdiocesan Museum and John Paul II Center, Cracow

The John Paul II Center on 18 Kanonicza street is right across from the Archdiocesan Museum (#19).
The Center has a few rooms in the basement devoted to the service of John Paul II as bishop and archbishop in Cracow. There are big photos with descriptions of what is happening. Also there are some quotes by John Paul II. It is amazing how much he sought out contact with others while serving the church. He regularly met with students (every year individually with each incoming theology student at Jagiellonian University in Cracow and for youth gatherings), workers (ie from Nowa Huta steel works), other clergy and nuns, families, the ill and others. That human contact was very important to his mission. He travelled all over Poland and made trips abroad, always serving God and others.
It is worth taking a look at this small exhibit. Free admission when open. The slogan of this Center is "Be not afraid" (Nie lekajcie sie) from his inaugural speech as Pope.

The Archdiocesan Museum across the street is larger. It always charges admission of 5 zloty ($1.75) and 5 more zloty if you want to take pictures. Here is the outside of the building.

The exhibits contain many things, all relating to John Paul II in various stages and activities during his life.  Of course there are the Papal vestments.

A look at his room there when he was priest and professor from 1951-58 (?).

Gifts from other countries. Here are the symbolic keys to the cities of Cleveland OH and Alexandria VA from visits there in 1969.

His diploma from Jagiellion University in Cracow.

His ordination papers for Archbishop and Cardinal. Here is for Cardinal.

His beloved kayak.

Many gifts from other countries - often religious in nature (chalices, candlesticks for the altar).

Downstairs there was a temporary exhibit on old sacred art. There were altar pieces, paintings, vestments, sculptures . You name it. Here is a pretty and old altar piece with the 3 kings.

It is definitely worth a look. Check out this museum in the heart of Cracow on one of the oldest streets.
